What can't be recovered
The way that drives store data means that it is not possible to recreate any directory structure. All that can be recovered is individual files of specified types.
The Need for Elimination
There are thousands of file extension types and a full recovery will uncover much more than the capacity of the storage media due to historical data on the drive, thus a recovery attempt will always have to be best endeavours to eliminate program data, execuables .dat .drv .dll and an infinate variety of obscure data that is useless on it's own.
The more specific you are about the files that are important to you makes the process less time consuming and less costly for you.
File Types
A standard recovery of a primary hard drive would involve searching for the following types of file.
Email - archives, emails, address books and calendar information.
Microsoft documents eg *.doc(Word),*.xls(Excel), *.ppt(Powerpoint).
Image files *.jpg
(we would not normally look for gifs or png files as these are normally only used in websites and not personal photos. This avoids us recovering some of the images in your internet history.
Other standard extensions we look for are
Movies / Videos - .mov, avi, wmv etc.
Music- mp3, mp4, wav etc.
Archived Files - Rar, zip, gzip, tar etc.
It is of great help to us, for you to to tell us what programs you use and store information with to make sure we are looking for what is important to you.
Examples
A professional photographer with a digital SLR camera would most likely be looking for images stored in .RAW format where most everyday digital cameras would use jpg's.
A graphic designer may need Illustrator, Photoshop, CorelDraw, EPS, PDF ...
If you program or design for the web then you may want specific file types such as .css, .php, .js, .htm, .html, .vb etc.
The Return of your Data
How your data is returned to you is your choice
(Usually DVDs or the original storage device provided it is not faulty).
For an additional cost we can organise the recovered data into a more navigable structure and attempt to weed out as much unnecessary information as we can.
If the storage media is a primary drive needed for your operating system then you can engage our services to reinstall and set up the operating system, set up your email accounts, internet, programs and repopulate your email and personal data.
Corrupt Files
Corrupt files are not necessarily the trait of old data. It could be something you're working on as new right now. Even if it's a single file then bring it to us. e.g. In the case of a single large word document we will most likely give a no recover no fee based quote. We understand! It could be a case of your university degree on the line with your dissertation gone bad, or your businesses master financial sheet not opening, or a customer database suddenly written in an 'alien language'. Don't panic until you've at least spoken to us.
Drive Failures
If you have the unfortunate event that your hard drive no longer functions at all 'stops spinning' then it 'can' be fixed but can be costly. We cannot stress the importance of backing up your data anough. In this event, your drive would have to be sent away to a specialist with the necessary equipment to re-mount the internals of your drive in a clean room environment.
